Swing

Two-hand and one-hand hip-hinge ballistic. The engine of Simple & Sinister.

Cues
  • Hike the bell back like a football snap
  • Snap the hips, don't lift with the arms
  • Stand tall at the top — glutes, not lower back
Common Errors
  • Squatting the swing instead of hinging
  • Arms doing the lifting

Clean

Bringing the bell from swing to rack without banging the forearm.

Cues
  • Thumb leads, elbow stays close to the ribs
  • Let the bell "sneak" into the rack — don't muscle it
Common Errors
  • Bell flips over the wrist and bangs the forearm

Press

Strict overhead press from the rack. A core strength standard.

Cues
  • Squeeze the handle hard before pressing
  • Groove the bell around the head slightly, finish stacked overhead
Common Errors
  • Leaning back to press instead of pressing straight up

Squat

Goblet and double-kettlebell front squat.

Cues
  • Elbows inside the knees at the bottom (goblet)
  • Sit between the heels, chest tall
Common Errors
  • Knees caving in
  • Heels lifting off the floor

Get-up (Turkish)

Floor-to-standing under load. The other half of Simple & Sinister.

Cues
  • Eyes on the bell the entire way up
  • Punch the bell to the ceiling, don't rush the transitions
Common Errors
  • Rushing the sweep to the lunge
  • Elbow drifting away from the body on the roll to elbow

Snatch

The bell travels from between the legs to locked-out overhead in one motion.

Cues
  • Vertical forearm path, close to the body
  • Punch through at the top — let the bell "float" into place
Common Errors
  • Looping the bell out and around (hurts the wrist)
